About
the Veterans of Foreign Wars The
VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American
War and the Philippine Insurrection founded local organizations to
secure rights and benefits for their service. These chapters
were
merged in 1914 to form the VFW which was incorporated in
1918.
There are currently 1.1 million men and women who belong to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Why You Should Join the Veterans of Foreign Wars After serving our country eligible veterans deserve access to VA Benefits and payments for service-related disabilities. Yet, without a large organization fighting to get and keep what you earned, you could wind up with nothing! When you become part of the VFW, your voice is heard. Your have access to resources that will answer your questions and advise you about your rights. And you will be among those who know what you experienced.
About VFW Post 981 Chartered
as
Arlington VFW Post 981 on October 5 1922 in Arlington Heights, IL, it
recently celebrated 100 years of existance and is one of the
oldest VFW posts in Illinois. Regular meetings take place the first Wednesday of every month starting at 7:00 PM At VFW Post 981 monthly meetings the business portion of the meeting is followed by a supper and beverages provided by the Post. There is usually one outside outing for Post members every few months, costing Post members and their guest a nominal amount, most of the expense being subsidized by the Post. We have gone to baseball and hockey games, movies and recently had a Sunday picnic to replace our Arlington Racetrack outing. Our Christmas party features an open bar, appetizers, gourmet meal, and entertainment, once again at a nominal cost to our members. WALLY LUETSCHWAGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP GRANT Please click on the following link for information about and the application for the annual scholarship grant awarded by Post 981. VFW Post 981 Supports Veterans & Active Duty The Post supports and participates in events benefiting veterans and active duty troops. See the article about our scholarship awards to veteran's descendants: We raise money through Poppy sales and sales of caps and stickers to the public to be used only for veteran and service member relief. As a Post we march in Arlington Heights Memorial Day and 4th of July and other parades in the suburbs we represent. We observe Veterans Day with a 21-gun salute at our AMVETS Wheeling meeting place . Our color guard pays tribute to departed members of our Post. It participates in various activities that honor fellow veterans and our country. See the video of our color guard on Memorial Day 2024:
